Guru Purnima is a ritual or a festival of the Hindus, Jains and the Buddhists which is celebrated as a dedication, showing respect and gratitude to the teachers/gurus that may be spiritual, academic or cultural gurus.
History behind Guru purnima
The festival is of paramount importance to the Hindu, Jain and Buddhist communities of the country, which indulge in festivities as a means of paying respect to their respective gurus.

In Hinduism, Guru Purnima is also called Vyasa Purnima and Gyaan Purnima. On this day, Ved Vyasa, the great sage was born. He is known as the most influential gurus in Hindu traditions. There is also a belief that he finished the writing of his famous work, Brahma Sutra, on this day. His disciples recite these sutras on this day marking their dedication and respect towards his work.
Buddhism :
It is believed that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon on this day. After five weeks of achieving enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Buddha went from Bodhgaya to Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh where he gave the sermon on the full moon day. The followers of Buddha thus, celebrate this day to worship him.Their rainy season varsha vassa also starts with this day. To observe Guru Purnima, Buddhist monks remain in their temples.

Guru Purnima is celebrated as Treenok Guha Purnima to honor Mahavira, the famous 24th Tirthankara in Jainism.
The Jainism followers believe that on this day, Mahavira got his first follower, Gautam Swami, after which he became a Treenok Guha.
Significance of Guru purnima
Guru Poornima is an Indian festival that is celebrated as per the Hindu Moon Sign calendar to express reverence towards your Guru, your teacher or mentors. It falls on the day of the full moon or Poornima of Ashadh month. Etymologically, the word Guru has been derived from two parts - Gu that means darkness and Ru that is the antidote to the darkness. Naturally, the word Guru implies someone who shows takes us away from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge.
Celebration
Guru Purnima is one of the most auspicious days in the Hindu calendar. It is celebrated on purnima (full moon day) in the month of Ashadha. Much like 5th September, which is marked as World Teacher's Day, Guru Purnima too is celebrated to pay gratitude to our teachers, known as 'Guru' in Sanskrit.
